The Mother Temple of Besakih

Located on the slopes of the sacred Mount Agung, this sprawling complex is comprised of 23 separate, interconnected temples. Founded in the 8th century by Bali’s first priest, the temple has been a central place of worship for Hindus ever since and became the state temple of the powerful Gelgel Dynasty in the 15th century. It’s also one of the six Sad Kahyangan Jagat, or "six sanctuaries of the world," according to Balinese tradition.

Trunyan: The Isolated Village

Next, we'll head to the isolated village of Trunyan, home to the original Balinese people, known as the Bali Aga. These "mountain people" are believed to be the descendants of the very first settlers on Bali, who established the island’s first settlements around the 8th century. Situated on the shores of Lake Batur, Trunyan is famous for its unique and ancient funerary customs. Rather than burying or cremating the deceased, the villagers simply lay the bodies on the ground under a sacred banyan tree. The powerful scent of the tree neutralizes the smell of decomposition, making this a truly remarkable and unforgettable cultural experience.
