Komodo Island is located in Flores, Nusa Tenggara, and is famous as the original habitat of the Komodo dragon, the only prehistoric animal in Indonesia that still lives today. This island is part of the Komodo National Park area, which must be preserved and protected by the government. Komodo Island is also included in the UNESCO world heritage site and the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
On this island, Komodo dragons live and breed well. Currently, there are around 1,300 Komodo dragons. The number of Komodo dragons living, if totaled with other islands such as Rinca Island, is 2,500. In addition to seeing Komodo dragons, on this island we can also enjoy the exotic natural beauty and the strong culture of the community.Â
The ideal time to enjoy Komodo Island is 5 days; 2 days for the trip and 3 days to enjoy the beauty of Komodo Island. To enter the Komodo National Park area, visitors are required to pay an entrance fee. Ticket payments are made at the ranger post which is around 200 to 300 meters from Loh Liang Harbor. The following are tourist attractions that we can visit:
Komodo Island
Loh Liang is the main location to see Komodo dragons on this island. Here, Komodo dragons are often seen at the bottom of the dry Bani Nggulung river. Activities that can be done on this island are trekking, of course accompanied by a local guide. There are three tracks.
The short track takes 45 minutes but the chance of seeing Komodo dragons is very rare. The ideal track is the medium track which takes 1.5 hours. When taking this route, we can see Komodo dragon nests and other wildlife such as deer and wild birds. And, if there is time and an adventurous spirit, we can take the long track which takes 3.5-5 hours. By taking the long track, our chances of seeing lots of wildlife and Komodo dragons are certainly greater.
Pink Beach
Pink beach is a beach with pink sand. It is said that there are only a few places in the world with sand like this. The pink color of the sand comes from coral fragments from the sea that mix with the sand. When you are here, you have to be a little careful because even though it is far from the Komodo habitat, Komodo dragons are also here occasionally. Usually Pink Beach is used as a snorkeling spot by tourists because of the beauty of the underwater scenery.
Kalong Island
The entire island is overgrown with swamp plants and is a nest for large bats. The sunset view on Kalong Island is very beautiful. At that time the sky was dominated by tens of thousands of bats that came out of their nests and flew to find food. This interesting natural phenomenon should not be missed.
